WHY DID RACHEL STOLE THE GODS OF HER FATHER'S HOUSE
INTRODUCTION
She stuffed them under her.
Small statues. Wood, clay, and metal. The "gods" of her father’s house.
And with one act of theft in the dark, Rachel didn’t just take idols.
She took inheritance. She took authority. She took security.
In _Genesis 31_, we meet a woman caught between two worlds: the God of her husband, and the gods of her father.
What drove her to do it? And what does her choice reveal about the "teraphim" we’re still hiding in our own saddles today?
That’s from _Genesis 31_ — Rachel stealing Laban’s "household gods" / teraphim.
Rachel stole her father Laban’s idols when Jacob was sneaking away from Haran with his wives, kids, and livestock.
Why she likely did it — 3 main reasons scholars talk about:
1. PROTECTION AND INHERITANCE RIGHTS
In that culture, whoever had the household gods was seen as the rightful heir and head of the family. Possessing the household gods is simply possessing authority over the family or household.
1.1 HOW THEY HAD THEM PHYSICALLY
- Small statues of 6 - 12 inches tall, made of wood, clay or metal.
- The statues were kept in the house
- The Teraphim were often an inheritance item like the family deed.
1.2 WHAT POSSESSING THEM MEANT LEGALLY AND SOCIALLY
In Mesopotamian and Canaanite Culture around Abraham and Jacob's Time, Possessing the teraphim meant you are:
- Rightful heir and head of the family household.
- Religious Authority: The owner would lead household worship, consult them for decisions, omens and blessings.
- Ownership of Property: You could claim the family property and land.
1.3 HOW THEY WERE USED
- Consultation for guidance and decision making
- Protection
- Bringing Prosperity
- Fertility.
By taking them, Rachel may have been trying to secure Jacob’s claim to Laban’s inheritance and prevent Laban from chasing them and legally claiming everything back.
2. LOYALTY
They were her father’s gods. Even though Jacob’s family worshipped God, Rachel grew up with those idols.
The pattern of Jacob's family worship was before the building of the tabernacle, before the priests and even before the written law. Worship was led by the head of the family.
2.1 HOW JACOB'S FAMILY WORSHIPPED GOD
- Altars and Sacrifices: They built altars and offered animals as sacrifices. `Genesis 35:1,7` `Genesis 46:1`
- Prayer and Vows: Direct talking to God. `Genesis 32:9-12`, `Genesis 28:20-22`
- Tithes: `Genesis 28:22`
- Obedience and Covenant: Circumcision was the sign of covenant from Abraham's time. `Genesis 34:14-15`
- Rejection of Idols. `Genesis 35:2`
Jacob's family worshipped "YAHWEH" not through any statues made by God or man.
2.2 HOW DID RACHEL GROW UP
Rachel grew up in Paddan-Aram in her father Laban's household. She was the younger sister of Leah. She was a shepherdess `Genesis 29:9`.
She grew up in a household where teraphim/idols were used for decisions, protection and inheritance. Idol worship was a normal thing.
She was exposed to polygamous family dynamics by living in a household with Jacob, Leah and 2 servant wives. That kind of rivalry was already modeled in Laban's home.
From `Genesis 29:17` we know that Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. Not just sitting at home, she actually worked with the flock.
This young lady was caught between 2 gods to worship: the God of her husband "Yahweh" and the idols of her father's house. It was a confusing dynamic for her that led to her death.
She might have taken them out of habit, sentiment, or fear — like a "family heirloom" or for luck on the journey.
3. TO LIMIT LABAN'S POWER
Laban used divination and idols to guide decisions `Genesis 30:27`. Laban used divination and idols as his way of getting guidance, predicting the future, and protecting his household’s authority.
Some think Rachel took them so Laban couldn’t use them to track or curse them, or to get guidance to bring them back.
3.1 WHAT HAPPENED AFTER?
Laban caught up with Jacob and searched the tents. Rachel hid the idols in her camel saddle and sat on them, saying she couldn’t stand because she was on her period `Genesis 31:34-35`. Laban never found them. Later Jacob buried them at Shechem `Genesis 35:4`.
7 LIFE LESSONS FROM RACHEL AND THE TERAPHIM
1. What you grow up with shapes you, but it doesn't have to define you
Your background influences you. But you can choose a different pattern of worship and values even if it’s not what you were raised with.
2. People grab for security in the wrong places when they're afraid
Fear makes us cling to "teraphim" — money, control, approval, old habits — instead of trusting God.
3. You can’t serve two gods and be at peace
Divided loyalty creates confusion. Real freedom comes when we fully commit to one Lord.
4. Loyalty to family shouldn’t override loyalty to truth
Just because something is "from family" or "how we’ve always done it" doesn’t mean it’s right. Honor family, but don’t carry what God is asking you to bury.
5. Hidden things will eventually come to light
Secrets we keep for "protection" or "control" still have to be dealt with. It’s better to deal with them honestly than let them hide in your "saddle."
6. Authority isn’t in objects — it’s in covenant
Your identity and future aren’t in titles, paperwork, or lucky charms. They’re in who you’re in covenant with.
7. God can work with messy, growing people
Rachel was conflicted and still unlearning her upbringing. God still used her line. Growth is a process. God meets us in the "in-between."
CONCLUSION: Challenge and Application
Rachel’s story didn’t end with the stolen idols.
It ended years later at Shechem, when Jacob finally said: _“Get rid of the foreign gods. Bury them_ `Genesis 35:2-4`
Because here’s the truth: you can run from Laban, but if you’re still carrying his teraphim, you’re not free.
What are you hiding in your saddle?
What old security, family pattern, or fear are you still sitting on?
God isn’t asking for perfect people. He’s asking for surrendered ones.
The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob doesn’t speak through statues. He speaks through covenant.
Lay them down. Bury them. And walk into the inheritance that only Yahweh can give you.
